MHS Cougar Lacrosse Captains - Class of 2005 May 10, 2005 Montgomery, NJ - | Stephen DeMarco “Success is a product of how much work the team puts in. Do not be happy just being mediocre; always strive to be the best.” This is the message that two year Varsity Captain Stephen DeMarco strives to share with his teammates. DeMarco sets high goals, and goes after them. He demonstrates this every time he is on the field, as he works to help his team achieve success. As a senior, he hopes his team will win the County Championship, as well as Bianchi and Skyland titles. He would also like to capture the Group II State Championship. DeMarco began playing lacrosse as a freshman, when he was recruited from the soccer field by Coach Sullivan. He spent many of his youth years on the soccer field, and played four years of high school soccer. As a Varsity soccer player, DeMarco received the Varsity Sportsmanship Award. DeMarco has played midfield for the Montgomery High School Lacrosse Team. He has achieved recognition as Varsity Most Improved Player, Honorable Mention All-Bianchi Conference, Varsity Sportsmanship Award, and 2nd Team All-Skyland Conference. He will attend Colgate University and he hopes to become a freshman walk on lacrosse player. | | | | | | Joe Calabro He claims, “Throwing with the wall can do wonders!” Apparently Calabro spent a great deal of time with the wall, as he has become the most accomplished lacrosse player at Montgomery High School. Coach Sullivan recruited Calabro from the soccer field. He spent many years playing youth soccer and was a member of the Princeton Union 86 Team. He has played two years of JV and two years of Varsity soccer in high school. During his sophomore year, he was selected Most Improved Player. During his senior season, he was again selected Most Improved Player, as well as being named 2nd Team All-Skyland Conference and Honorable Mention in the Star Ledger. Calabro, who plays LSM for the Montgomery High School Lacrosse Team, is a four year Varsity player. As a sophomore, he was selected team MVP. He was also named a Bianchi League All-Star and selected 2nd Team All- Conference. As a junior, he was selected 1st Team All-State, 1st Team All- Area Trenton Times, 1st Team Princeton Packet, 1st Team All-Curcio and 1st Team All-Skyland Conference. Calabro has also been a team captain for two years. After completing his senior season, Calabro will continue to play lacrosse at Quinnipiac University. | | | | | Rick Murphy Rick recalls “Growing up in Nigeria we didn’t know what lacrosse sticks were. Once a friend and I stole one and used it for fishing. Over time I pulled the stick out of the water and learned how to use it. In America I was able to learn how to play lacrosse but I will never forget my fishing roots.” Murphy surely learned how to use the long pole and is a key contributor to success of the Montgomery High School Lacrosse Team. “Leaving baseball was not an easy decision, but well worth it considering how much fun lacrosse has been.” As a defenseman, Rick Murphy completes his final season of high school lacrosse with no regrets. In fact, he is grateful that Coach Sullivan convinced him to trade his bat for a six foot lacrosse stick. “This has got to be the best sport ever!” Murphy began playing lacrosse for Montgomery High School as a freshman. He has been part of a team that has experienced tremendous growth over his four years as a player. Last year he was named 2nd Team All-Curcio Division. In his final year as one of the team captains, he hopes to see the team accomplish a conference win and move deep into the state tournament. He has already achieved one goal this season, which was “to get Steve Demarco to cut his hair”! After playing four years of high school soccer and lacrosse, Murphy will move on to Villanova University. He is sure to be an asset on campus. He can definitely teach his peers how to use a long pole, or at least how to fish with a lacrosse stick! | |
