Happy Gilmore once explained that he was a hockey player who
just happened to be playing golf. Last spring Will Treichler
could have paraphrased that with, “I’m a football player who
just happens to be playing lacrosse.” Funny how a year can
change things. Will has become a lacrosse player, first,
foremost and most definitely.
Will’s first love had always been football. A running back
and linebacker/defensive back since 6th grade, Will relished
the contact football provided. He’s been a leader on and off
the field, a fact recognized when he was named a co-captain of
Montgomery’s 2006 football team. As starting tailback he led
the team in rushing for two seasons amassing 1360 yards, while
adding 205 receiving yards and leading the team in rushing
touchdowns for two years. Crossing the goal line for the
winning scores in the North Hunterdon and Voorhees games
sophomore year and the overtime winning touchdown in the North
Hunterdon game junior year were some memorable moments.
Playing both ways Will set a Cougar school defensive game
record 14 tackles against Monroe and was second on the team
with 63 tackles for the season. As a senior Will was a
recipient of the Most Valuable Player award from his coaches,
who lauded his dedication and unselfish commitment to the
team. He also earned All-Princeton Packet defensive back
honors, All-Skyland Conference first team honors, and
honorable mention All-Area from The Courier News. As a junior
he was named second team All-Skyland Conference and third team
All-Somerset County by The Star Ledger
A recent convert to the game of lacrosse, Will retired his
baseball catcher’s gear following his sophomore season in
spring 2005. (Interestingly the catcher’s gear had been
purchased a couple of years earlier from Sean Hover, after
Sean made a similar transition to lacrosse.) Despite never
having played, Will decided to make the switch to lacrosse and
with his affinity for contact and defense, he opted to become
a long pole defenseman. His declared goal was to take the
field as a starting varsity defenseman on opening day of the
2006 season. Whether practicing in the backyard, banging balls
off the school wall, playing in summer leagues, captains’
practices in the fall or the winter indoor league, Will had a
stick in his hand learning the game from scratch about 250 of
the 270 days before the lax season began. He accomplished his
goal starting every game for the 2006 season. His quickness
and agility allowed him to be an integral part of a stingy
defensive trio helping the Cougars reach the State
Championship game against Ramapo last June. Along the way he
scooped up 43 ground balls, flattened a number of unsuspecting
opponent middies, and against The Hun recorded a rare
long-pole goal.
Will is a leader who gives his all to his teams and
his teammates, on and off the field. His leadership and
contribution to the team was recognized by Coach Sullivan when
he was named a co-captain of this year’s lacrosse team. Will
has also been recognized as an all-around athlete by his
classmates, being named Senior Class Male Athlete.
No longer is Will the football player playing lacrosse.
Lacrosse has become Will’s sport of choice and the one he will
pursue at the next level. He has had the honor of having been
recruited by Coach Nagle of Colgate University, and has
committed to become a Red Raider lacrosse player next year,
joining former Cougar Jim Yetter on the field. |
